Women's Basketball Hosts NCAA Sectional This Weekend (VIDEO)

BRUNSWICK, Maine – For the first time since 2004, the Bowdoin College women's basketball team will host an NCAA Division III Sectional this weekend at Morrell Gymnasium.

DeSales (27-2) will face Ithaca (24-5) on Friday at 5:00 p.m., followed by Bowdoin (28-1) and SUNY New Paltz (25-4) at 7:00 p.m. Saturday's sectional final will be at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $7 for adults, $4 for seniors (65+) and students. Bowdoin students are free w/ID. Advance tickets will sold in the Bowdoin Athletic Department on the second floor of the Peter Buck Center from 8:30-5:00 on Thursday, March 7 and from 8:30-3:00 on Friday, March 8. Remaining tickets, including the allotment held for visiting teams, will be sold when the doors open at 4:00 p.m. Friday prior to the doubleheader.

Bowdoin College Polar Bears (28-1)
Bowdoin qualified for its 13th "Sweet Sixteen" appearnce in this, its 19th NCAA Tournament appearance overall - both numbers are the most of any NESCAC school... Bowdoin is looking for its second-straight trip to the "Final Four", and third overall (2004, 2018)... the Polar Bears took a runner-up finish in last year's NCAA Championship...Bowdoin owns the nation's third-best scoring offense (84.4) and second-best scoring margin (+28.8) against the nation's third-ranked strength of schedule... the Polar Bears polished off just the second undefeated regular season in program history and spent the majority of the year ranked first in both the D3hoops.com and WBCA Division III polls... NESCAC Coach of the Year Adrienne Shibles became the program's winningest head coach earlier this season and owns a 251-64 record at Bowdoin (.796)...1,000-point scorer Abby Kelly was named NESCAC Player of the Year and senior Taylor Choate was named NESCAC Defensive Player of the Year.. Kelly was joined by Maddie Hasson as a First Team All-NESCAC selection...Choate set a new program record for single-game points (38) and three-pointers (7) in the NCAA Second Round win over Smith. 

DeSales University Bulldogs (27-2)
At 27-2 DeSales has equaled the best-ever record in terms of winning percentage in school history when DSU went 27-2 in 1989-90…the 27 wins have tied the school-record for most in a season and the Bulldogs enter this weekend with a 22-game winning streak…head Coach Fred Richter is in his 29th season and has a career record of 558-239 (.700)…the Bulldogs are making their 13th appearance in the NCAA Tournament history.  This is their second trip to the "Sweet Sixteen", joining the 2008 squad…four players earned All-MAC Freedom honors two weeks ago including senior Morgan Birmelin on the First-Team and also named the MAC Freedom Player of the Year, freshman Samantha Shinkus and Averi Jordan on the Second-Team.  Shinkus was also named the MAC Freedom Rookie of the Year and Coach Richter the MAC Freedom Coach of the Year…Birmelin leads Division III in assists averaging 7.5 per game. She is also 12th in the country in steals (3.6/game). Birmelin is DSU's all-time leader in career assists with 642…as a team DSU is among the top 20 in the country in several categories including: scoring offense (6th – 79.1 PPG); FG Percentage Defense (2nd - .302); Turnover margin (4th – 9.66) and Turnovers forced (9th – 25.1).

Ithaca College Bombers (24-5)
This is Ithaca's 15th appearance in the NCAA Tournament. IC currently holds a 16-14 record in NCAA play…this is the first time since 2014 that the Bombers have made it to the Sweet 16 and just the fourth time in program history. In 2014, Ithaca reached the Elite 8 when assistant coach Mary Kate Tierney was a senior… senior Annie Giannone and junior Cassidy O'Malley were both All-Liberty League First Team selections this season. Sophomore Grace Cannon earned an All-Liberty League Honorable Mention… O'Malley eclipsed 1,000 career points on February 9 after scoring 18 points against St. Lawrence… With the second-round win over St. Joseph's (Maine), Head Coach Dan Raymond hit 400 wins as Ithaca's head coach. He previously eclipsed 400 career wins on January 4 against Union.

SUNY New Paltz Hawks (25-4)
SUNY New Paltz hosted the regional rounds of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history this past weekend. The Hawks defeated Rutgers-Newark (65-36) and then Emmanuel College (80-49) to advance to their second "Sweet Sixteen" and first since 2017…SUNY New Paltz defeated defending conference champion SUNY Geneseo in the SUNYAC finals to clinch the program's fourth SUNYAC title and third in four years… Lindsay Bettke was named SUNYAC Player of the Year, teammate Rachel Simon was named First-Team All-SUNYAC and head coach Jamie Seward earned his second SUNYAC Coach of the Year honor… SUNY New Paltz is currently on a 21-game winning streak. They haven't lost this calendar year, with their most recent setback coming on Dec. 30 to Cabrini… Lindsay Bettke notched her 1,000th point earlier this year. Bettke and fellow four-year senior Taylor Howell are the winningest players in program history…SUNY New Paltz have eight players on their roster who were a part of their 2017 "Sweet Sixteen" team.
