Women's Basketball Defeats Clark to Take 2012 Holiday Invitational Crown

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's basketball team defeated Clark 58-53 in the championship game of the 2012 Bowdoin Holiday Invitational at Morrell Gymnasium on Sunday.

Bowdoin was paced by three players in double figures, including 11 from Tournament MVP Kaitlin Donahoe, who also dished out four assists and collected five rebounds. The Polar Bears have won four of their last five games and improve to 5-4 with the win. Clark falls to 7-3 with the setback.

Kirsten Prue scored 13 points, including 4-of-5 from three-point range, to also earn All-Tournament honors for Bowdoin. Emily Reilly led Clark with 16 points and was the Cougars' representative on the All-Tournament squad while Regis' Claire Ramonas and Clarkson's Ashley Loggins were also named. Regis defeated Clarkson 56-44 in the consolation game earlier on Sunday.

Bowdoin held Clark to just 16% shooting in the opening half and used an 11-2 surge late in the period to take a 27-21 edge at intermission. Reilly hit a three-pointer to close the gap to 27-24 immediately after the break, but Bowdoin replied with a 10-0 run, sparked by consecutive three-pointers from Megan Phelps and Prue, to extend its lead to 13 points, 37-24, with 16:20 to go.

Clark could get no closer than eight points until an 8-0 run trimmed the Bowdoin lead to 47-40 with under four minutes to go. The Cougars had a chance to cut into the lead further, but Bowdoin forced a turnover and pushed the lead back to double digits on another Prue trifecta with 2:01 to go. Clark hit a pair of three-pointers in the final minute to close the final gap to five points.

Bowdoin held a 45-35 edge on the glass and held the Cougars to just 24% shooting for the contest.

Phelps led Bowdoin with 14 points and nine rebounds in Sunday's win. For the weekend, Donahoe averaged 15.5 points, 6.5 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 2.0 steals. Prue finished with a 15.0 points per game average and nailed 9-15 from long range in the two games.

The Polar Bears return to action on Friday evening at home against Hamilton College at 8:00 p.m. Clark will host Tufts in their next outing Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.

Regis 56, Clarkson 44


BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Regis College women's basketball team outlasted Clarkson, 56-44, in the consolation game of the 2012 Bowdoin Holiday Invitational on Sunday at Morrell Gymnasium.

The Pride improve to 4-3 with the win while Clarkson drops to 2-6 on the season.

Emilee Marro scored a game-high 14 points to lead Regis while Claire Ramonas added 10 points and seven rebounds. Ashley Loggins paced Clarkson with 12 points and 12 rebounds in the loss.

Ramonas and Loggins were both named as All-Tournament Team selections.

The Golden Knights stayed within striking distance in the first 17 minutes of play, but the Pride used a key 8-0 run heading into halftime and extended its lead to 35-20 on a driving lay-in by Janaya Bradley that beat the first half buzzer.

The Pride pushed their advantage to as many as 25 points in the second half before Clarkson chipped away, closing the final margin to a dozen points.

The Golden Knights held a 43-39 edge in rebounding, but committed 23 turnovers, directly resulting in 20 points for the Pride that proved to be the difference.
