Bates Bats Carry Bobcats to Rainy Victory Over Bowdoin

BRUNSWICK, Maine - Leah Maciejewski collected three hits, including a two-run home run, to lead the Bates College softball team to a 7-4 win over Bowdoin at a rainy Pickard Field Saturday. Game two of the scheduled doubleheader between the NESCAC East Division foes was called due to the worsening weather. No make-up date has been announced.

With their first win over Bowdoin since 2009, the Bobcats improve to 8-10 (2-6 NESCAC) while the Polar Bears dip to 18-15 (7-4 NESCAC).

Bowdoin took a second inning lead thanks to Gen Barlow's fourth home run of season, a solo shot to left field. After leaving eight runners on base over the first three innings, the Bobcats bats came alive in the fourth, as the visitors plated two runs on a Maciejewski single and a AnnaMarie Martino hit to take a 2-1 lead. Bates added another run in the fifth on an error and scored twice more in the fifth on an RBI double by Courtney Talcott and an Alayna Garbarino single to increase their advantage to 5-1.

The Polar Bears scored three times in the bottom of the frame, piecing together a rally in the continuing rain on a bases loaded walk from Hillary Smith, an RBI ground out by Molly Nestor and a wild pitch that scored Barlow to close within 5-4. Bates brought in pitcher Caroline Gattuso to squelch the comeback, as the Bobcat reliever retired the final Polar Bear batter with two runners on base to secure the lead. Maciejewski sealed the win for Bates with a long two-run blast over the left field wall in the top of the seventh.

Bates starter Kristen Finn earned the victory after allowing just three hits but walking eight over 5.2 innings pitched. Gattuso collected the save for the Bobcats. Tricia Thibodeau took the loss after allowing four earned runs and 12 hits for Bowdoin. Martino and Garbarino had two hits apiece for the Bobcats while Bowdoin's Amy Hackett and Barlow each reached base four times in the loss.
