Coach Pizzo's Report - April 8

The Polar Bears competed in two regattas this weekend including the Emily Wick Trophy at the US Coast Guard and the Fowle Trophy for the Team Race New England Championship.  The Wick was the last fleet race regatta before the Women's qualifier so the event serves as an important regatta.  The team gained valuable experience on the starting line and managing the fleet at the top of the race course.  Sailing for the Polar Bears was Claire Havig, Gigi Diserio, Ellie Maus, Hannah Konkel, Kelsey Slack, Teagan Cunningham, and Caitlin Tardio.  The Polar Bears finished 12th of 18 teams competing.

Just up the river, the Polar Bears competed in the Team Race New England Championship at Connecticut College.  The event serves as the qualifier for the Team Race National Championship which will be hosted in Newport, Rhode Island May 25-27.  The Polar Bears finished the initial round robin with a record of 7-4 and qualified for the top eight.  The top eight round was extremely competitive and the Polar Bears went 4-3 in the round including a decisive win against Yale to secure fourth place overall and the final spot for the Team Race National Championship.  This is the first time that the team has qualified for the event in program history. Sailing for Bowdoin was Matt Kaplan, Louisa Lindgren, Matt Safford, Alden Grimes, Christian Filter, Alissa Chen, Julia Adams, Marie Bergsund, and Emily Gonzalez.

This upcoming weekend the team will be competing in the Women's National Team Race Invitational, the Owen Trophy, and the Central at Tufts.
