Coach Pizzo's Report - October 15
The Polar Bears competed in three regattas this weekend including the Ross Trophy at UVM, the Showcase B Finals at MIT, and the Match Race NE Champs.
Conditions were cold on Lake Champlain this weekend with eleven races completed in a wide range of wind conditions. The Polar Bears finished second of nine teams with Per Black '22 and Sophia Schaefer '22 winning A-division and Emmett Ulian '19, Kevin Elk '20, and Elijah Berger '22 competing in B-division.
The Polar Bears had a great weekend at MIT at the Women's Showcase B finals. Eighteen races were completed in each division. The Polar Bears finished first overall. Claire Havig '21, Alissa Chen '22, Ellie Maus '22, and Hannah Konkel '20 competed in A-division and Kelsey Slack '21, Caitlin Tardio '19, Teagan Cunningham '22, and Isabelle Austin-Green '19 competed in B-division.
Finally the first New England Championship of the fall season took place at Corinthian YC in Marblehead. The Polar Bears competed against seven other teams for the Match Race NE Champs. Bowdoin finished the first round with a 5-2 record, earning the second seed into the quarter finals. Against MIT in the quarters, Bowdoin won with a 2-1 record. In the semi finals, Bowdoin faced Dartmouth. After losing the initial race, Bowdoin won the next two. In race four of the series, Bowdoin was leading Dartmouth heading into the final beat but sailed in a small hole in the wind allowing Dartmouth to make a pass. The fifth and deciding race for the finals was a great battle with both teams exchanging the lead. Bowdoin rounded the final run right behind Dartmouth with both teams having their best spinnaker sets of the regatta. Bowdoin was able to roll over Dartmouth's breeze on the final run but ended up losing the race by a half boat length at the finish. Bowdoin faced Brown in the Petit Finals and defeated the Bears 2-1 earning a third place finish overall. Competing for Bowdoin was Alden Grimes '21, Matt Safford '20, Louisa Lindgren '19, and Matt Kaplan '19.
The Polar Bears will be competing in the Showcase A Finals at St. Mary's this weekend and the Oberg Trophy at MIT.
