Coach Pizzo's Report - October 1

The Polar Bears competed in two regattas this past weekend including the Women's Showcase at St. Mary's College of Maryland and the Danmark Trophy hosted by the US Coast Guard Academy. While we have had great breeze during the week, both events were both limited by light air sailing.  Down at St. Mary's, the team competed in College Sailing's first ever Showcase Regatta with teams from all over the US.  Despite it being early in the season, the competition level was high with competitive starting lines and tight windward marks.  The young Polar Bear squad had some ups and downs but a solid weekend overall, finishing tied for 10th overall, losing the tiebreaker to the home team of St. Mary's.  The finish qualifies the team for the Alt Showcase Finals at MIT October 13-14.  Competing for the Polar Bears was Claire Havig '21, Isabelle Austin-Green '19, Teagan Cunningham '22, Ellie Maus '22, Caitlin Tardio '19, and Kelsey Slack '21.

The Danmark Trophy was the first interconference regatta of the fall season for the coed team and featured nearly all the top teams in the country.  Only five light air races were completed in each division.  The Polar Bears finished 7th out of 20 teams, nine points out of third place overall.  Matt Kaplan '19 and Julia Adams '21 competed in A-division with Christian Filter '20 and Louisa Lindgren '19 in B-division with Per Black '22 as an alternate.

This upcoming weekend the Polar Bears will competed in the Coed Showcase at MIT and the Sister Ester Trophy at Salve.
