Coach Pizzo's Report - September 10

The Polar Bears had a solid opening weekend competing in four regattas including the Harry Anderson Trophy at Yale, the Toni Deutsch Trophy at MIT, the Harman Cup and the Penobscot Bay Open both hosted by Maine Maritime.  Up at Maine Maritime, Per Black '22 and Gigi Diserio '22 sailed A-division with Teagan Cunningham '22 and Caitlin Tardio '19 competing in B-division at the Penobscot Bay Open.  This was the first college regatta for three of the four sailors.  The group struggled a bit on Saturday but sailed the boats much better on Sunday and finished 7th of 11 teams.  Alden Grimes '21, Rowan Byrne '21, Kelsey Slack '21, and Matt Safford '20 came from behind and won the 2018 Harman Trophy.  The team won six of the eight races and defeated BC by one point.  The finish qualifies for the team for the Match Race New England Championship hosted by the Corinthian Yacht Club October 15-16.

Down at MIT, the team competed in terrific conditions on the Charles River.  Thirteen long races were completed in the two day event.  Claire Havig '21 and Alissa Chen '22 competed in A-division with Ellie Maus '22, Isabel Austin-Green '19, and Sophia Schaefer '22 competed in B-division.  The group had a solid first event with many good races against a strong women's fleet.  The team finished 7th of the 13 teams.

Finally, the team had a great event down at Yale finishing 4th of 16 teams.  The team had a strong Sunday which allowed the Polar Bears to move up the leaderboard.  Starting and good boat speed were the keys to doing well in the races.  Matt Kaplan '19 and Louisa Lindgren '19 competed in A-division with Christian Filter '20 and Julia Adams '21 competed in B division with Kevin Elk '20 and Elijah Berger '21 as reserves.

This upcoming weekend the team will host the Barnett Trophy and will compete in the Regis Trophy and Hatch Brown Trophy.
