Tennis Teams Set For NESCAC Championship This Weekend

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College men's and women's tennis teams have learned their seedings for the upcoming NESCAC Tournament scheduled to begin Friday at Middlebury College.

The Polar Bear men are seeded third and will play Trinity in the opening round at 9:00 a.m. Friday. The Bowdoin women are seeded fourth and will battle fifth-seeded Wesleyan at 3:00 p.m. Friday in the first round.

Bowdoin (13-4, 6-3 NESCAC), who won the 2008 NESCAC Championship, picked up key wins in the final weekend of the regular season by defeating Tufts, 5-4, and Williams, 6-3. Earlier in the season, Bowdoin also registered a 6-3 victory over Trinity on March 19. Trinity (10-4, 5-3 NESCAC), who is looking to advance to the second round for the first time since 2010, enter the postseason with conference wins over Connecticut College, Colby, Hamilton, Wesleyan and a pivotal 5-4 win against Tufts on April 8. Last season, Bowdoin knocked off Trinity by the score of 5-1 to improve to 4-1 in the all-time NESCAC Championship series versus the Bantams. Friday's winner will advance to play second-seeded Middlebury in the semifinals on Saturday at 9:00 a.m.

Fourth-seeded Bowdoin (12-4, 6-2 NESCAC) will take on fifth-seeded Wesleyan (11-3, 6-3 NESCAC) in a first round women's match on Friday afternoon. Since losing a 5-4 match to Pomona-Pitzer on March 15, the Polar Bears went 9-2 with both losses coming in 5-4 decisions to Williams and Amherst. Two weeks ago, Bowdoin dominated second-seeded Middlebury in a 7-2 result. One of Bowdoin's conference wins included a 7-2 triumph over Wesleyan on March 10 in California. The Cardinals are making their second all-time NESCAC Championship appearance. Wesleyan's previous berth came in 2008 when it dropped a tight 5-4 match to Tufts in the first round. The winner of the match will face top-seeded Williams on Saturday in the semifinals at 3:00 p.m.
