Polar Bears Fall to Defending National Champs Wash U

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The 11th-ranked Bowdoin College men's tennis team lost an 8-1 decision to second-ranked and defending national champion Washington University on Wednesday afternoon. The Polar Bears (1-1) lost several close decisions in the match played at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

The number one doubles match was a battle of nationally ranked teams as the ninth-ranked team of Stephen Sullivan and Alex White fell in a tiebreaker to third-ranked Cutler and Hoeland of Wash U. In singles, 17th ranked Stephen Sullivan lost to the #1 player in the country John Watts. Bowdoin's lone victory came at #2 singles where first-year Oscar Pena downed the #12-ranked player in the country Charlie Cutler in an epic three set match, rallying back after dropping the first set 6-0 to win the second and third sets 6-4, 7-6(8).

Bowdoin showed some strength in depth as first-years Andrew Won and Alex Jacobs did well in exhibitions winning easily at #4 doubles 8-3 as did Nicholas Fenichell at #8 singles winning 6-3, 6-0. Up next, the Polar Bears have a pair of important matches against #16 Carnegie Mellon on Friday and #13 Redlands University on Saturday.
