Bowdoin Falls to Emory in NCAA Third Round

FALMOUTH, Maine - The third-ranked Emory University men's tennis team will return to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the 17th straight season after capturing a 5-3 win over Bowdoin in the Third Round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday afternoon at the Portland Athletic Club. The Eagles (17-6) will play at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine on May 13 against Kenyon College in the Division III Quarterfinals. Bowdoin finishes their campaign with a record of 15-9.

Bowdoin grabbed an early lead on Sunday, collecting a pair of wins courtesy of the Stephen Sullivan/Jamie Neely and Tyler Anderson/Alex White pairings at #2 and #3 doubles.

Leading 2-1 entering singles play, Emory tied the score with a 6-2, 7-5 win from David Caplan at #3 singles, but Bowdoin quickly responded with a #2 singles win from rookie Stephen Sullivan to give the Polar Bears a 3-2 lead with four singles matches remaining on the court.

A pair of epic matches turned the tide in the Eagles' direction. Michael Goodwin's comeback 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory at #1 singles over Bowdoin's top player Garrett Gates tied the score, and sparked the Eagles' deciding rally. Oliver Lopp rallied from a one-set deficit at #4 to beat Jamie Neely (1-6, 7-5, 6-2) and give Emory their first lead of the afternoon. Colin Egan closed the match at #6 singles, picking up a 6-4, 6-2 win to send Emory to the NCAA Quarterfinals.
