BRUNSWICK, Maine – Bowdoin College men's soccer senior Moctar Niang (New York, N.Y.) has been named an All-American in honors announced by the United Soccer Coaches this week.
It is the first All-American honor for Niang, who was also named a First Team All-New England selection. Senior Matty McColl (Victoria, B.C.) and sophomore Drake Byrd (Simpsonville, S.C.) joined him in All-Region honors as they were both selected as Second Team All-New England honorees.
Niang closed out a sensational career with a dynamic season for Bowdoin, earning his third consecutive First Team All-NESCAC selection. Working out of the backfield, Niang was tied for second in the league with 15 points, scoring a team-best seven goals with two game-winners. In 69 career matches, he racked up 19 goals and four assists and is only the second three-time First Team All-NESCAC player for Bowdoin, joining Nick Figueredo '08.
Drake Byrd enjoyed a breakout sophomore campaign for the Polar Bears, scoring five goals and adding three assists, including a pair of game-winning tallies. Both game-winning goals came in key NESCAC wins, against Middlebury (Sep. 22) and Trinity (Oct. 6).
Matty McColl was a vital part of the Polar Bear offense this year, playing on the wing for Bowdoin and racking up a team-best six assists, ranking fourth in the league. He also added a game-winning goal on October 1 against Thomas. He finishes a stellar career with seven goals and 16 assists in 62 career games. His 16 assists are tied for sixth all-time in program history.
