Mammoths Shut Out Polar Bears in Friday Action

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Amherst men's ice hockey team pinned a 3-0 setback on Bowdoin in Friday night NESCAC action in Watson Arena.

The Mammoths improve to 9-6-3 (6-4-3 NESCAC), while the Polar Bears slide to 6-11-2 (3-9-1 NESCAC).

Game Highlights

  • With 4:02 remaining in the first period, the Mammoths took the lead on their first power play of the game. Joey Lupo carried into the Bowdoin zone along the left boards and centered the puck to Jack Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald fired a shot and the puck snuck through Alex Zafonte's pads, only to sat inches from the goal line. John Festa skated in to finish off the play.
  • With 45 seconds remaining in the period, Amherst extended its lead. Lupo pulled the puck out of the right corner and carried midway up the boards before crossing to Phil Johansson. The senior wristed a top shelf shot past Zafonte.
  • The Polar Bears put together a pair of promising scoring chances in the second period. Bradley Ingersoll and Cody Todesco traded the puck back and forth on a two-on-one, but Michael Cullen denied Todesco's wrister two minutes in.
  • Ingersoll paired up with Albert Washco later in the period for a two-on-goal, but Ingersoll's pass to the left post just beyond Washco.
  • The Mammoths iced the game with an empty-netter as Lupo won the puck off the boards in the defensive zone and skated into Bowdoin territory, around a sliding defender, and put the puck away.

By the Numbers

  • Bowdoin went 0-for-4 on the power play, including a five minute major in the final minutes of the game.
  • Amherst went 1-for-2 on the power play.
  • Zafonte ended the day with 30 saves.
  • Cullen made 28 stops for the shutout.
