WATERVILLE, Maine – Hugh O'Neil hit the go-ahead bucket with 38 seconds remaining to give the Bowdoin men's basketball team a big 72-69 road win at Colby on Saturday afternoon.

The Polar Bears avenge an early-season loss to the Mules with a victory in the NESCAC contest and improve to 10-5 (2-2 NESCAC). Colby drops to 12-5 (1-3 NESCAC) with the loss.

Game Highlights

  • Bowdoin led for the entirety of the first half thanks to 12 points from Jack Simonds and 11 from David Reynolds.  
  • The Polar Bears lead by as many as nine points in the first period before a late Colby surge cut the lead to 38-37.
  • A pair of Jack Simonds free throws gave Bowdoin a 40-37 edge at intermission.
  • A wild second half ensued, which featured two ties and eight lead changes.
  • Following two Reynolds free throws with 4:25 remaining, Bowdoin owned a 66-62 lead, but Colby used a 5-0 run, capped by a Matt Hanna three-pointer with 3:14 on the clock, to take a 67-66 edge.
  • Zavier Rucker hit a jumper to regain the lead for the Polar Bears with 1:34 on the clock, but Colby answered with two free throws from Sam Jefferson to secure a 69-68 lead with 54 seconds remaining.
  • Bowdoin coolly brought the ball downcourt and David Reynolds quickly found O'Neil streaking to the basket for an easy lay-in and a 70-69 lead with 38 seconds to go.
  • Bowdoin got a defensive stop and David Reynolds hit two free throws to make it 72-69.
  • Colby had 13 seconds for a final possession, but threw the ball out of bounds without attempting a shot.
