BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Colby College men's basketball team defeated Bowdoin for the first time since January of 2010, defeating the Polar Bears 61-48 on Saturday afternoon at Morrell Gymnasium.

The Mules snap an eight-game losing streak to Bowdoin and improve to 6-3 this season. The Polar Bears have lost three in a row and drop to 4-3 with the setback.

Ryan Jann led three Colby players in double figures with 14 points while Chris Hudnut added 10 points and 10 rebounds. Luke Westman pitched in 10 points, four assists and four steals for the Mules.

Bowdoin also had a trio in double digits, led by 12 points and 12 rebounds from John Swords. Lucas Hausman also had a dozen points while Keegan Pieri posted 11 points and seven boards.

A back-and-forth first half saw the Polar Bears claim a 26-25 lead as Blake Gordon buried a free throw with no time on the clock. Swords scored four straight points to open the second half as Bowdoin extended its lead to  30-25 with under 17 minutes to play.

Connor O'Neil answered with five straight points for the Mules, sparking a 10-1 surge that would give Colby the lead for good, 35-31, with 13:30 to go. Bowdoin closed to within a single point following a Swords jumper, 38-37, with 10:30 to go. But the Mules quickly replied with a three-pointer from John Gallego, keying a decisive 16-3 run that extended Colby's lead to 54-40 with three minutes remaining.

The Mules hit 11 of 13 free throws down the stretch to seal the victory and held Bowdoin to just 2-15 (13.3%) from three-point range. Neither team shot over 40% for the game and Bowdoin held a slim 36-35 edge in rebounding. Colby took advantage of a limited Polar Bear bench, however, getting 19 points from its substitutes compared to just three points for Bowdoin's.

Bowdoin will close out its first semester with a home game on Tuesday evening against Maine Maritime (7:00 p.m.). Colby will not play again until December 31 at Babson (1:00 p.m.). The teams will match up again on January 24 for the NESCAC contest in Waterville.
