NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. - The Bowdoin College men's basketball team defeated the University of Maine-Farmington, 72-38, in the first game of the 2011 Hampton Inn Classic at the Tripp Athletic Center at UMass Dartmouth Friday night.
The Polar Bears improved to 1-0 with the victory, while the Beavers fell to 0-2 with the defeat. Bowdoin will play host UMass-Dartmouth for the championship Saturday at 3:00.
The Polar Bears opened the game on a 19-2 run and closed the first half on a 13-0 run to claim a commanding 44-11 lead at the break. Ryan O'Connell led the first barrage for Bowdoin with 11 points including 3 for 3 from behind the arc. Yusuf Iman paced the Beavers with 6 points in the opening half. The Polar Bears out-rebounded the Beavers 27-12 and held Maine-Farmington to 16% from the field on 5 of 31 shooting.
The Beavers would get as close as 53-24 in the second half on a three-pointer by Garrett Clemmer but eventually Bowdoin would increase their lead to as much as 66-30 on a three-pointer of their own by Wyatt Littles, en route to the victory.
Bowdoin had three players reach double-figures. Will Hanley had a game-high 19 points on 9 for 11 shooting from the field. O'Connell finished with 13 points and Andrew Madlingher added 11 points. Maine-Farmington was led Joe McCloskey with 12 points and Iman chipped in with 11 points.
For the game, the Polar Bears shot 50% from the field going 30 for 60 from the floor including 8 of 17 from three point range. Bowdoin also had an advantage on the boards, out-rebounding the Beavers 50-32.
