NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Bowdoin College women's volleyball team took an emphatic 3-0 win over Emerson in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Tournament on Friday at Connecticut College.

The win ties the program record for wins in a season (27) set by last year's team. Bowdoin (27-4) advances to the second round of the tournament on Saturday, where they will face Springfield at 3:30 p.m. Emerson finishes its year with a mark of 19-11.

Bowdoin claimed the first set 25-21 before taking a commanding 25-16 win in the second. Down early in the third set, the Polar Bears rallied to pull away and close out the match with a 25-20.

Christy Jewett led the way for Bowdoin with 10 kills, three aces and three blocks. Ellie Brennan notched nine kills and 13 digs while Sophia Cornew dished out 31 assists and earned 10 digs. Alyssa Thorne paced Emerson with 14 kills.

It was the second NCAA Tournament win all-time for the Polar Bears, who picked up their first Division III Tournament win last year. Bowdoin will be looking to advance to the "Sweet Sixteen" for the first time in program history.

The Polar Bears will look to gain a measure of revenge against the Pride, who was the only non-NESCAC team to defeat Bowdoin this season, 3-1 on September 21. Fans can follow all of the action with a video webcast of the contest by clicking here.
