PENTATHLON RESULTS
BRUNSWICK, Maine - The MIT women's indoor track and field team claimed the 2009 New England Division III Championship, totaling 134 points to defeat runner-up Williams (118) at the meet hosted by Bowdoin College on Saturday.
Top individual performances included pole vaulter Ettta Grover-Silva of Smith College, who set a New England Division III record with a height of 3.70 meters. Two automatic NCAA qualifiers came out the competition, as Tufts triple jumper Nakeisha Jones and Williams 5K runner Lauren Philbrook both exceeded the requisite standards.
The host Polar Bears posted several impressive performances, including Ali Chase, who placed first in the 600 meter run. Annie Monjar took second in the 3000 meter while the 4x800 meter relay team of Chase, Dana Riker, Jessica Sokolow and Molly Duffy also finished as runners-up. Long jumper Laura Peterson also set a new school record in the triple jump, totaling 37-11.25 to best the mark of 36-9.5 set by Casey Kelley in 2002. Bowdoin finished fourth of 24 teams overall.
