WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The Bowdoin women's tennis team opened its 2013-14 season at the Morehouse Invitational hosted by Williams last weekend.
All players from Williams, Middlebury, Vassar, Bowdoin and Skidmore had the opportunity to compete this weekend in the Invitational.
Several Bowdoin players made their collegiate debut at the invitational. Joulia Likhanskaia lost to Middlebury's Ria Gerger (6-2, 6-3) but rebounded with a pair of wins over Melissa Hirsch of Skidmore (6-1, 6-1) and Margot Marchese of Middlebury (6-1, 6-1). Pilar Giffenig also began her Bowdoin career going 2 for 3 on the weekend. After dropping her opening match to Hannah Atkinson from Williams (7-5, 6-2) she earned a pair of wins over Lily Bondy of Middlebury (7-6, 1-2 ret.) and Robyn Baird of Skidmore (6-2, 6-2). Anna Kaplan faced three players from Skidmore and one from Vassar in her opening weekend going 2-2.
Bowdoin's returners also had a successful first outing of the season as Tiffany Cheng defeated Alex Smith (6-0, 6-0) and Madie Benn (6-3, 6-1) from Skidmore. Cheng battled in her opening set against Rebecca Curran of Williams, 7-5, before dropping her second set 6-0. Susan Howard earned a pair of victories over Vassar's Kelsey Van Noy (6-2, 6-2) and Emily Hallewell (6-0, 6-2), only falling to Middlebury's Dorrie Paradies (6-0, 6-1).
In doubles play, the Polar Bear duo of Likhanskaia and Emma Lewis took two matches from Middlebury opponents (9-7 and 8-4) while only falling to a pair from Williams (9-7).
The Polar Bears are back in action, beginning Friday, at the three-day Penn Invitational.
