BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College men's and women's squash teams will compete in the 2013 New England Small College Athletic Conference Tournament scheduled for this weekend at Trinity College in Hartford, Conn.
The sixth-seeded Bowdoin women will open with a first-round match against Tufts on Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. The fifth-seeded Bowdoin men received a first-round bye and will open play on Saturday at noon against Middlebury.
Trinity's George A. Kellner Squash Center will serve as the host for this year's championship bracket matches, while select consolation matches will take place at Wesleyan's Rosenbaum Squash Center.
The Bowdoin women (7-10) will play Tufts (2-7) for the second time in a week, as the Polar Bears claimed a 9-0 win at the Maine Event last Friday. It was the first of four straight victories for the Polar Bears, who reached the semifinals in 2007 and 2009. The winner of Friday's match will advance to play third-seeded Middlebury on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
The Polar Bear men (11-7) will hope that the third time is the charm against fourth-seeded Middlebury (11-5). The two teams will be meeting for the third time this season after the Panthers prevailed 5-4 on December 1 and 6-3 on January 5. The Panthers will begin the weekend in search of their third straight trip to the semifinals. Bowdoin reached the semifinals in both 2008 and 2010 before falling to Trinity. The Polar Bears knocked off Middlebury 8-1 in the 2010 quarterfinals and will enter the tournament as one of the league's hottest teams after winning five straight and six of seven. Bowdoin has split eight contests against league opponents this season.
