BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's squash team celebrated its rise up the collegiate rankings with a convincing 7-2 win over Colby on Thursday evening at the Lubin Center.
The Polar Bears, who moved to #17 from #20 in the latest College Squash Association poll, snapped a three-game losing skid with their triumph over the Mules. Bowdoin stands at 4-9 overall this season, and had a busy five-day stretch dating back to the Yale Round Robin last weekend.
At Yale, Bowdoin earned a 6-3 win over 21st-ranked Drexel before falling to national powers #7 Stanford (8-1), #3 Yale (9-0) and #12 Columbia (9-0). The Polar Bears rebounded with their victory on Thursday against #22 Colby.
Bowdoin's depth paid dividends against Drexel, as the Polar Bears earned key points from the middle of their lineup. With Rachel Barnes and Alden Drake picking up wins at #2 and #3, Bowdoin got points from their 5-8 positions to seal the win. Monica Wlodarczyk, Bonnie Cao, Sara Wlodarczyk and Christiana Whitcomb took credit for the victories, respectively. Sara Wlodarczyk followed it up with Bowdoin's lone point against Stanford at #7.
Against the Mules, Bowdoin got going with tight early wins from Gretchen Williams at #9 and Alden Drake at #3. The Polar Bears rolled from there, as Barnes (#2), Michaela Martin (#4), Monica Wlodarczyk (#5), Sara Wlodarczyk (#7) and Christiana Whitcomb (#8) netted wins to seal the Polar Bear victory.
The team will return to action this weekend with four matches in the span of 24 hours as they host the Maine Event at the Lubin Center beginning on Friday.
