Squash Teams Earn Season-Opening Wins in Weekend Action

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College men's and women's squash teams both collected wins as the 2011-12 season kicked off last weekend.

The 18th-ranked Polar Bear men earned a pair of wins at the Harvard Round Robin Saturday against Tufts (7-2) and Stanford (7-2) while the 20th-ranked women edged 19th-ranked Wesleyan 5-4. Both squads returned home Sunday and lost 9-0 decisions to Trinity.

On the women's side, Bowdoin featued first-years at the top four positions on the ladder in both matches and got some solid results. Rookies Rachel Barnes, Alden Drake and Demi Angelakis all collected victories against Wesleyan at the #2-4 positions, as sophomores Michaela Martin and Christiana Whitcomb accounted for the other two points at #7 and #9 to seal the win. Martin's marathon match was key, as she collected a 3-2 (12-14,12-10,11-6,7-11,13-11) come-from-behind victory.

The Bowdoin men earned solid victories over two teams ranked in the 20's in the national poll, with five players collected two wins each. Barrett Takesian, Andrew Hilboldt, Reid Wilson and Andrew Ward dominated the #2-5 positions against Tufts and Stanford, while Maxwell Bearse also earned two wins at the #8 position.

Neither team could take a point against the Bantams on Sunday. Trinity is ranked first in the men's national poll while their women stand fourth overall in the nation.
