Rutgers Ends Bowdoin's Season in NRU Consolation Match

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Rutgers University women's rugby team scored a pair of tries late in the first half and held off a late Bowdoin comeback to take a 20-12 win in the consolation match of the Northeast Rugby Union playoffs on Sunday at Vassar College.

With the second loss in as many days at the regional, the Polar Bears do not qualify for Nationals and conclude their year with a record of 10-3.

Bowdoin took the early lead when Kerry Townsend scored a nice try in the opening period. Rutgers drew within 5-3 on a penalty kick midway through the period and was able to pressure Bowdoin into some mistakes late in the half that led to two tries and a 15-5 advantage at intermission.

The Polar Bears bounced back when Helen White fed Townsend for another score in the second half, bringing Bowdoin to within 15-12, but that would prove to be as close as they could get. The Scarlet Knights scored on the final play of the game to seal the 20-12 win.
