BRUNSWICK, Maine - The University of Rhode Island women's rugby team dealt Bowdoin its first loss of the season, 22-12, on Saturday in the Second Round of the New England Rugby Football Union Tournament.
The Polar Bears (9-1) are the third-ranked team in New England and will face the winner of the SUNY Fredonia/SUNY Binghamton match on November 5th in a cross-over game for the right to play in the Northeast Rugby Union Championship on Nov. 12-13.
URI scored 12 minutes into the contest with a crashing backline switch to their outside center, taking a 5-0 lead after a missed conversion. Bowdoin countered within a minute after the forward pack handled the kick off, got quick ball off the ruck, and Mathews fed inside center Randi London, who took advantage of the URI defense coming up early. She sprinted 50 meters to touch it down, and she made the conversion kick to give Bowdoin a 7-5 lead.URI was able to regain the lead before intermission, scoring on an overlap in the corner to take a 10-7 edge at the break.
After halftime, Uche Esonu took the ball from the base of the ruck from 5 meters out and dove for the line, bringing Bowdoin ahead 12-10. But URI was able to bounce back with 12 unanswered points to take the win.
