BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's lacrosse team celebrated Senior Day with a resounding 17-2 non-conference win over Wheaton on Sunday.
The 16th-ranked Polar Bears improve to 7-5 while the Lyons fall to 9-6. Five of Wheaton's six losses this season have come to NESCAC opponents.
After Brooke Sabol scored the initial goal of the game to give Wheaton a 1-0 lead, the Polar Bears rolled off 10 straight goals in a span of 20:32 to take a commanding lead. Betsy Sachs scored the first four goals of the run, and Megan O'Connor added three as Bowdoin sprinted to a 10-1 advantage. Angela Mallis scored just 41 seconds before halftime for Wheaton to make it 10-2 at the break.
The Polar Bears continued to dominate in the second half and did not permit a shot over the final 30 minutes. Lindsay Picard scored all three of her goals in the second period as Bowdoin posted its second-highest goal output of the season.
O'Connor finished with four goals and two assists in the win for Bowdoin while Sachs added four and Picard finished with three. Emma Beecher and Jordan Smith also found the back of the goal twice. Molly Popolizio dished out three assists and grabbed three draws for the Polar Bears. Defensively, Erica Nangeroni caused four turnovers and collected three ground balls while Isabel Sippel (41 min.) and Ella Blanchon (19 min.) split time in goal for Bowdoin.
In addition to goals from Sabol and Mallis, Allie Bush had an assist for the Lyons. Katy Ananian made six saves and caused three turnovers in goal for Wheaton. Mallis had a team-best three ground balls.
Bowdoin will return to action on Thursday as they travel to play at Southern Maine at 4:30 p.m. Wheaton will host Springfield on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m.
