BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's lacrosse team left little doubt in its first victory of the season on Thursday night, a 20-2 victory over the University of New England.
The 12th-ranked Polar Bears improve to 1-1 on the season after dealing the Nor'easters (3-1) their first loss of the campaign.
Jordan Smith led all players with a career-high eight points, scoring four goals and assisting on four others in the win. Molly Popolizio dished out four assists as well and scored a goal while Betsy Sachs and Lindsay Picard each notched a hat trick. Kelsey Gallagher came off the bench to supply three assists for the Polar Bears.
Gina Newsome had a goal and assisted on the other for UNE in the loss. Hannah Tavella tallied the other goal for the Nor'easters.
Bowdoin blitzed the Nor'easters with 15 unanswered goals - including seven in the first 4:08 - and never looked back. UNE scored with one second remaining in the opening period to make it 15-1 at the break. The Polar Bears dominated draw controls, winning 19 of the 23 on the evening. Courtney Kendall allowed 12 goals over the first 11:15, making two saves, before being replaced by Lauryn Huck, who made three saves and permitted eight goals over the remaining 48:45. Bowdoin's Isabel Sippel made one save and allowed one goal in the first half. Ella Blanchon stopped two shots and allowed one goal in the second half for the Polar Bears.
Annie Glenn led Bowdoin with six draw controls while Megan O'Connor caused turnovers and collected three ground balls. Hannah Warren paced UNE with three caused turnovers and four ground balls.
Bowdoin will return to action at Amherst on Saturday for a 12:00 p.m. start. The Nor'easters will look to bounce back at home next Thursday against Southern Maine at 5:00 p.m.
