AMHERST, Mass. - Rebecca McGovern scored five goals, including three in the second half, as the Williams College women's lacrosse team defeated Bowdoin 12-8 on Saturday in the season-opener for both squads.

The Ephs (1-0) entered the season unranked in the IWLCA Preseason Poll while the Polar Bears (0-1) were ranked eighth in the rankings. It is the first win for Williams against Bowdoin since 2010.

McGovern was supported by three goals from teammate Alyssa Amos. Bowdoin received three goals each from Jordan Smith and Lindsay Picard. Betsy Sachs scored a goal and an assist and had a team-high four draw controls.

After Williams scored the game's first goal, the Polar Bears used a quick 3-0 surge to take the lead thanks to consecutive tallies from Picard. Williams answered with a 5-1 run over the final 16:03 of the period to take a 6-4 edge into halftime.

McGovern scored a pair of goals early in the second half to push the Williams lead to 8-5 with 22:45 to go, but Bowdoin got back-to-back scores from Smith and Sachs to trim the lead to 8-7 with 13:55 on the clock.

The Polar Bears could get no closer, however, as the Ephs used a 4-1 surge over the final ten minutes to pull away.

Isabel Sippel made six saves in the loss for Bowdoin. Williams' Ali Piltch was credited with seven stops. Shots were tied 22-22 but Bowdoin committed 13 turnovers in the loss.

The Polar Bears will look to get into the win column on Thursday as they play their home opener against the University of New England at 7:00 p.m.
