Over the past eight seasons, few programs in the nation have been as successful as Bowdoin. The Polar Bears have reached the "Elite Eight" of the NCAA Tournament in six of the last seven seasons, and have qualified for the NCAA Tournament every year since 2000. Since the NESCAC instituted a postseason tournament in the 2000-01 campaign, Bowdoin has won seven of eight conference crowns and set the New England record with 76 consecutive home victories in the process.
The Polar Bears also play in front of one of the most rabid fan bases in Division III athletics. The Bowdoin women's basketball team played before the second-most amount of fans in Division III women's basketball in 2008-09 (a total of 15,178 fans for the season), averaging an astounding 1,012 per home game at Morrell Gymnasium.
In addition to the program's recent success, the 1995 squad won the ECAC New England championship, while the 1989, 1996 and 1997 teams were ECAC finalists. Individual players have been awarded numerous national and regional honors including five Regional All-Americans (Amy Harper '85, Laura Schultz '96, Kristi Royer '03, Lora Trenkle '04 and Eileen Flaherty '07) and three First-Team All-Americans (Amy Harper '85, Lora Trenkle '04 and Eileen Flaherty '07). In 2007, Flaherty received the most prestigous award in Division III Women's Basketball when she was named the WBCA National Player of the Year.
