WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – First-year Rachel Kennedy extended her goal-scoring streak as the Bowdoin College women's ice hockey team skated to a 1-1 tie at Williams on Friday evening.
The sixth ranked Polar Bears are now 13-2-2 (7-1-1 NESCAC). The last time these two teams faced off also resulted in overtime play, with Bowdoin skating to a 3-2 victory in the NESCAC quarterfinals in 2012. The Ephs are now 8-8-1 (4-4-1 NESCAC) for the season.
The Polar Bears scored the first and only goal of the opening period, with just three minutes off the clock. Rachel Kennedy netted her team-leading 11 goal of the season to give Bowdoin the 1-0 lead. After Bowdoin sustained pressure on the Williams defense with a lengthy possession in the Ephs' defensive zone, Kennedy finished off a loose puck in front of the net. The remaining 17 minutes of play during the period were scoreless. The rookie forward has scored a goal in each of Bowdoin's last four outings.
Williams came out in the second period showing renewed energy and aggressive play. Sam Weinstein moved into the high slot and sent a low wrister to the blocker side of Bowdoin goalie Kayla Lessard to net the Ephs' first goal in the game. The tying score came just 1:54 into the second.
Despite multiple power play opportunities for the Polar Bears during the third stanza, Bowdoin was unable to convert and was forced into overtime by the Williams defense.
Both teams took numerous shots on net, yet were unable to score more than one goal apiece as outstanding goal tending proved the deciding factor in this 1-1 tie. Lessard had 21 saves tonight for Bowdoin. Chloe Billadeau made 33 stops in net for Williams.
The Ephs and Polar Bears faceoff again tomorrow at 3:00 PM in Williamstown.
