BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's basketball team never trailed Saturday, cruising to a 65-45 win over visiting Wesleyan University at Morrell Gymnasium.
The 20th-ranked Polar Bears improve to 14-1 (2-0 NESCAC) on the season while the Cardinals fall to 10-4 (1-1 NESCAC). Bowdoin leads the all-time series 28-5.
Bowdoin's Sara Binkhorst had 15 points to lead all scorers, while Anna Prohl had 11 with six rebounds. Shannon Brady accounted for 10 points with Megan Phelps pitching in 11 off the bench for the Polar Bears. Wesleyan was paced by 14 points from Jenna Klaes and 10 points from Cherkira Lashley.
The Polar Bears sprinted to an 11-3 lead thanks to five early points from Binkhorst. The junior guard had 13 first-half points, including 3-3 from long distance, to give the hosts a 34-24 lead at halftime.
The Cardinals stayed within striking distance in the second period, until Bowdoin rolled off a decisive 11-0 run, to take a 51-32 lead with under ten minutes to play. The Bowdoin defense took over from there, holding the Cardinals to just 24% shooting in the second half en route to the victory.
Bowdoin connected on 42% of its shots for the contest and held a 41-32 edge in rebounding. The Cardinals shot 28% for the game and went 13% (2-15) from three-point range.
The Polar Bears will return to action next Friday at Williams (6:00 p.m.) while the Cardinals play next at Middlebury on Friday (6:00 p.m.).
