THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - The Bowdoin College women's basketball team never trailed after the opening moments of a 90-66 victory over Rivier College in opening day action at the Posada Royale Holiday Classic hosted by Cal-Lutheran on Friday afternoon.
The Polar Bears improve to 7-2 overall and will play the host Regals at 7:00 p.m. (EST) Saturday to round out the two-day tournament.
Jill Henrikson led all players with 20 points, including 6-9 from the field and 3-5 from three-point range. She also had seven rebounds and five assists for the Polar Bears. Alexa Barry had a season-high 17 points to go with six rebounds while Kaitlin Donahoe scored 15 with seven assists and four steals. Amy Hackett also saw double figures with 12 points, six caroms and six assists. Amanda Purcell scored a team-high 18 for Rivier.
Rivier led 5-4 three minutes into the contest as the teams traded buckets in the early going. Henrikson responded with a three-pointer to give the Polar Bears a lead they would never relinquish and spark a 25-4 run. Bowdoin held a 40-20 lead at intermission, hit on 50% (33-66) of its shots, and held a 41-24 edge on the glass.
Bowdoin forced 28 turnovers and scored 35 points directly off of them, holding as large as a 26-point lead en route to the win.
