Correa Tallies Walkoff Single and Two-Run Homer as Softball Sweeps Colby

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin softball team completed a series sweep of Colby with a pair of wins Saturday afternoon.

Bowdoin captured its first win of the day with a two-out walk-off single from Casey Correa to take the 1-0 victory. The Polar Bears would make it a sweep of the Mules after a 4-2 win in the second game pushed their season record to 16-6 (5-1 NESCAC). Colby falls to 4-12 (1-4 NESCAC) after the series.

The pitchers were dominant on both sides in the opener, with Emily Griffin earning the win while facing just 25 total batters. Aimee Polimeno was equally strong, facing just 26 batters with five strikeouts and only one walk. Griffin matched Polimeno's strikeout tally, while allowing just two hits in seven innings. With the teams scoreless heading into the final frame, Colby looked to put a run on the board with Maria Ennamorati waiting at third. Griffin escaped the inning clean after fielding a grounder and throwing out the runner at first.

The Polar Bears opened their final at bat with back-to-back singles from Hanna Wurgaft and Katie Gately. Marisa O'Toole loaded the bases with a bunt, but Polimeno managed to strikeout the following two batters. With two away, Casey Correa squeezed a single between the first and second basemen to drive in Bowdoin's winning run.

Colby scored its first run of the series in the opening inning of the second game. Katie McLaughlin reached second in the leadoff spot, following an error by Bowdoin and advanced to third on the following play. A Colby walk put runners on the corners, and the Mules took advantage. Drawing the throw at second on a stolen base attempt, McLaughlin scored from third to give Colby the quick 1-0 lead. Bowdoin answered right back in the bottom of the inning with Wurgaft driving in a runner from third.

The Polar Bears put three more runs on the board in the third inning, as Dimitria Spathakis knocked an RBI double. Correa followed up with a two-run shot to right center field as the Polar Bears took the 4-1 lead. The Mules were not finished, as they tacked on another run in the following inning, with Tori Sansone driving in a run off a groundout to third. Julia Geaumont pitched a complete game for Bowdoin allowing just four hits and two runs, while retiring the side in order to conclude the game. Megan Michie pitched three innings for the Mules, allowing six hits and four runs. Polimeno came in for the final three innings of work, allowing no hits with a pair of strikeouts.

Colby is scheduled to play at Thomas College in a Monday doubleheader. Bowdoin will travel to Tufts for a pair of rescheduled games tomorrow beginning at 12:00 p.m.
