BRUNSWICK, Maine – Melissa DellaTorre pitched seven shutout innings, allowing just one hit, as the Bowdoin softball team defeated Colby 2-0 on Friday afternoon.
The Polar Bears improve to 14-6 (3-1 NESCAC) as the Mules drop to 4-10 (1-2 NESCAC) following the opening game of this weekend's series. DellaTorre faced just 25 Colby batters to earn the win, striking out five while walking two.
Both teams remained scoreless through four complete innings of play, combining for seven runners left on base. Bowdoin finally broke through in the top of the fifth with Casey Correa tagging a leadoff single. Siena Mitman entered the game to run for Correa and quickly stole second to put herself in scoring position. Adriane Krul tallied an RBI single that allowed Mitman to score and put Bowdoin on top 1-0. DellaTorre retired the side in order for the next two innings, with Colby doing the same to Bowdoin in the sixth. Correa collected her second hit of the night with a solo shot to right center field, giving Bowdoin the 2-0 lead. Once again, DellaTorre proved dominant in the circle, striking out a pair of Colby batters before the Mules flew out to center to end the game.
Megan Michie pitched seven strong innings for Colby, allowing just two runs off six hits, while earning four strikeouts and one walk in the loss. DellaTorre's only blemish came in the top of the fourth with Grace Farnkoff collecting a single.
