BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College and University of New England softball teams split a Thursday afternoon doubleheader at Pickard Field.

The Polar Bears dropped the first game, 6-4, before rebounding for a shutout 5-0 victory in the nightcap. Bowdoin concluded its home campaign and now boasts a 25-11 record. Nor'Easters stand at 22-15-1 this season.

Tied at 2-2 entering the seventh inning, the Nor'Easters broke through with a four-run outburst. After loading the bases with one out, Amanda Vallante cleared the bases with a hard single to right that was mishandled off the bounce, allowing three runners to score. Erin Grove lifted a fly to center, bringing home her team's fourth run of the inning. Bowdoin looked to rally in the bottom of the seventh after a leadoff double by Siena Mitman. Cielle Collins followed up with an RBI double of her own and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Toni DaCampo drove Collins in off a single left center, closing the gap to 6-4. Bowdoin could get no closer, however, as Abby Lambert closed out the complete-game victory by scattering 10 hits, allowing four earned runs and striking out three. Julia Geaumont took the loss for Bowdoin. Amanda Vallante had two hits for UNE while Toni DaCampo finished with a game-high three hits for the Polar Bears in the loss.

Melissa DellaTorre tossed six strong innings before Tricia Thibodeau came in for a 1-2-3 seventh in Bowdoin's game two victory. DaCampo and Barlow hit consecutive doubles in the bottom of the first to account for Bowdoin's 1-0 lead. DaCampo's triple down the right field line put her in position to score on a wild pitch in the third, giving the hosts a 2-0 edge. DellaTorre continued to stifle the Nor'Easters bats, allowing only three hits after working out of trouble in the first inning. With a pair of runners on, Barlow blasted a three run homer in the fifth frame to put Bowdoin on top 5-0. Thibodeau closed the game on the mound for the Polar Bears, causing a fly out and pair of groundouts to end the evening. Chelsea Damon took the loss for the Nor'easters, who got two more hits from Vallante. DaCampo and Barlow had two hits apiece for the Polar Bears.

Bowdoin travels to Brandeis for a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m. The University of New England heads into its conference playoffs with a game on April 29 at 2:30 p.m.
