Polar Bear Softball Continues to Roll With Thursday Sweep of Thomas

WATERVILLE, Maine – The Bowdoin softball team captured a pair of wins in a rescheduled doubleheader at Thomas College on Thursday.

The Polar Bears outpaced the Terriers with a 10-1 win in the opener, followed by a 13-4 victory in the nightcap. Bowdoin has collected nine straight wins, boasting a 22-9 record, heading into a weekend series with Bates. The Terriers (8-23) had won four consecutive games before falling to Bowdoin.

Tricia Thibodeau and Nancy Walker combined to allow only three hits and one run while striking out four in game one. Toni DaCampo opened for Bowdoin with a double to center field, followed by a walk from Gen Barlow. Katie Gately singled to left and advanced to second on the throw to home as DaCampo came around to score. With runners on second and third, Nicole Nelson hit a two-run double. The Terriers answered Bowdoin in the bottom of the first as Janelle Ciomei drove Alyssa Eugley in with an RBI triple. Thomas' only other hit of the night would come in the third inning with a single to right. The Polar Bears proceeded to score at least one run in each of the final three innings. Bowdoin opened the third with both DaCampo and Barlow reaching base, before Katie Gately blasted a three-run homer to center field. Victoria Rusch followed up with a single and quickly advanced to third following an error. Siena Mitman's sacrifice fly allowed Rusch to score, putting Bowdoin up 7-1. Barlow's homer in the fourth combined with a pair driven in by Adriane Krul in the fifth closed out the eight-run rule win for Bowdoin.

Thibodeau earned her second win of the afternoon as the Polar Bears topped Thomas in game two. Once again the Terriers scored in the first inning, this time jumping out to a 4-1 lead after two fames. But Bowdoin would take control of the game from that point on, combining for a total of 11 hits. Nelson collected a pair of doubles and a home run, going 3-3, while supplying the Polar Bears with six RBIs. Hanna Wurgaft also hit a pair of doubles, sending in a run, en route to Bowdoin's victory. Krul hit a solo shot in the third and an RBI single in the team's nine-run fifth inning that sealed the second eight-run rule victory of the afternoon.

Bowdoin begins a three game series against conference opponent Bates on Friday in Lewiston, before playing a home twin bill on Saturday. Saturday's doubleheader has been moved to a 2:00 p.m. start.
