Softball Dominates Colby, Finishes Off Three-Game Sweep on Sunday
WATERVILLE, Maine - Julia Geaumont scattered seven hits in a complete game in a 7-1 win in the opener and Melissa DellaTorre allowed four hits in the 11-1 victory for Bowdoin College in the nightcap as the Polar Bears took two games from Colby College in NESCAC East softball Sunday.
Bowdoin moves to 18-9 overall and 5-4 in conference play, while the Mules drop to 8-9 overall and 2-4 in the league.
Geaumont struck out two and walked none in the opener, while DellaTorre struck out two and walked three over five innings in a game shortened because of the eight-run rule.
Both teams scored one run in the first inning of the opener. Katie Gately's RBI single brought in Toni DaCampo in the top of the first for Bowdoin. In the bottom of the inning, Meaghan Lewia reached on a single, went to third on a single by Carylanne Wolfington, and scored on an RBI groundout by Emily Schatz.
The game stayed tight for the opening four innings, but Bowdoin managed to score the game-winning run in the fifth. Hanna Wurgaft had a one-out single and later scored on a single by Gately.
The Polar Bears added two more runs in the fifth inning. Casey Correa had a two-out double and pinch-runner Dimitria Spathakis scored on Nicole Nelson's double. Nelson then scored on a single by Cielle Collins. Wurgaft led off the seventh inning with a single and DaCampo followed with a two-run homer for a 6-1 margin. Gately singled and later scored on a wild pitch for the final run.
In the second game, the score was tied 1-1 after two innings. Geaumont had an RBI single to bring in Adriane Krul for the Polar Bears in the top of the second. Tori Sansone had a one-out walk, moved to second on a walk to Erica Pulford, and scored on a double by Lindsay Peterson for Colby's lone run. Gately had an RBI double to bring in Gen Barlow, while Krul smacked a two-run triple to plate Gately and Victoria Rusch in the top of the third.
Siena Mitman led off the fourth inning with a home run to pace a five-run fourth. Gately had a two-run double to bring home Wurgaft and Barlow, Rusch followed with a double to score Gately, and Correa had a two-out single to bring in Rusch.Mitman singled to lead off the top of the fifth inning and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Barlow for a 10-1 margin. Rusch drove home DaCampo, who had singled, with the final run.
The Polar Bears host the University of Maine-Farmington with a Tuesday double-header starting at 3:30 p.m.
