CLERMONT, Fla. - The Bowdoin softball team opened its campaign with an impressive sweep on Wednesday in Florida.
The Polar Bears (2-0) got big hits from seniors Gen Barlow and Toni DaCampo en route to a 6-3 win over Denison and 4-3 win over St. Scholastica.
Against Denison, Bowdoin took an early lead thanks to run-scoring singles from Casey Correa and Hanna Wurgaft. Leading 2-1 heading into the top of the seventh, Barlow delivered the big blow - a grand slam - to push the Polar Bears over the top.
First-year Julia Geaumont tossed a complete game for Bowdoin, scattering 11 hits and allowing three earned runs with eight strikeouts. Correa and Victoria Rusch had two hits apiece for the Polar Bears.
In game two, Toni DaCampo ripped a walk-off single to left in the bottom of the seventh to give Bowdoin a 4-3 win over St. Scholastica. Bowdoin trailed 3-0 after two innings but started chipping away when DaCampo blasted a solo homer to left in the third. A pair of errors by Scholastica led to a pair of Bowdoin runs in the fifth and, in a 3-3 game in the bottom of the seventh, Hanna Wurgaft tripled to right field with one away, setting up DaCampo's game-winning hit.
Tricia Thibodeau threw 5.1 innings, permitting no earned runs for Bowdoin. Melissa DellaTorre tossed 1.2 innings in relief to get the victory.
