Softball Trio Named All-NESCAC in Postseason Honors
BRUNSWICK, Maine - Three members of the Bowdoin College softball team have been named All-New England Small College Athletic Conference in honors announced by the league on Thursday. Senior P/DP Kara Nilan (Pittsfield, Mass.), sophomore SS Toni DaCampo (Woburn, Mass.) and first-year P Melissa DellaTorre (Scarborough, Maine) were all named to the conference's Second Team.
Bowdoin finished its season with a record of 22-18, just missing out on the NESCAC Tournament.
The 2010 NESCAC Pitcher of the Year, Nilan was on pace for another record-breaking campaign until injury cut short her season. Even without the benefit of a full campaign, Nilan still captured Second Team recognition after a stellar year that saw her go 6-5 with a 1.25 ERA and 76 strikeouts over 73 innings pitched while walking just 15. Her 1.25 career earned run average is easily the best in school history (by nearly a third of a run) while her 24 career victories are tied for sixth in school history. In addition, Nilan batted a team-best .368 this spring.
Filling in the void as Bowdoin's #1 starter following Nilan's injury, DellaTorre was more than up to the task, finishing her rookie campaign with a 10-4 record and 1.39 ERA. Twice named NESCAC Pitcher of the Week, five of DellaTorre's wins came in conference play as she ended the season with 108 strikeouts in 100.2 innings and walking just 15 batters. Opposing batters could muster just a .201 batting average against the first-year from Scarborough, who was second in the league at 7.51 strikeouts per game.
Toni DaCampo was Bowdoin's top threat at the plate this season, averaging .310 at the dish with a team-best .457 slugging percentage, 53 total bases, 25 RBI and seven doubles. She also earned NESCAC Player of the Week honors once during the season and made just four errors in 135 chances at shortstop for the Polar Bears. She also proved one of Bowdoin's most reliable players as she missed just one of Bowdoin's 40 games this season, starting 39 contests overall.
