Coach Pizzo's Report  - October 1

The Polar Bears had a busy weekend competing in four regattas including the Smith Trophy at MIT, the Hewitt Trophy at Dartmouth, the Regis Bowl at Boston University, and the Danmark Trophy at Coast Guard.

Fourteen races were completed in each division at the Smith Trophy hosted by MIT.  The Polar Bears finished 10th of the 18 teams competing.  Louis Frumer, Isabelle Austin-Green, Kelsey Slack, Martie Ogle, Emmett Ulian, Eve Allen, Rowan Byrne, and Kevin Elk competed for the Polar Bears.

Down the Charles River at BU, the women's team competed at the Regis Trophy.  Conditions were great on Saturday but light winds limited racing on Sunday.  The Polar Bears finished 12th of the 16 teams. Ellis Price and Caitlin Tardio sailed A-division and Claire Havig and Nora Cullen sailed B-division.

The Hewitt Trophy was historically the northern New England Championship.  Currently it is run as a three division conference major and featured many of the best team in New England.  A lack of breeze on Lake Mascoma limited racing on Saturday.  Sunday brought a building NW breeze, allowing for seven races to take place in three division.  The Polar Bears finished 7th of the 15 teams competing.  Matt Safford and Marie Bergsund sailed A-division, Alex Vasiliou and Jake Griffin sailed B-division, and Michael Kann and Julia Adams competed in C-division.

The major interconference regatta of the weekend was the Danmark Trophy hosted by the US Coast Guard Academy.  The event is historically the most competitive regatta of the year outside of the national championships.  Lightning storms delayed racing on Saturday but 8 races were completed in each division.  Sunday had good sailing for most of the day, allowing for 13 races to be completed in each division.  The Polar Bears finished 12th out of 20 teams and were less than 20 points out of the top 8.  Representing the Polar Bears was Matt Kaplan, Emily Gonzalez, Harrison Hawk, Louisa Lindgren, Eric Hall, Alden Grimes and Hannah Konkel.

This upcoming weekend, the Polar Bears will host the Barnett Trophy and will compete at the Moody Trophy at URI and the North U Regatta at Sail Newport.
