Coach Pizzo's Report - April 10
The Polar Bears competed in two regattas this weekend including the Harpswell Sound Team Race at home and the New England Fowle Trophy Championship at Tufts. Conditions were cold and windy for both regattas on Saturday. At home, three round robins were completed on Saturday with the Polar Bears finishing with a 3-6 record. Two more round robins were completed on Sunday in a light westerly breeze that eventually turned into a terrific sea breeze. The Polar Bears went 6-0 on Sunday, finishing with a record of 9-6 and tied Vermont for second overall. Sailing of the Polar Bears was Alex Vasiliou, Kevin Elk, Marie Bergsund, Louis Frumer, Matt Safford, Hannah Konkel, Mike Kann, and Eve All. A huge thanks to our alumni Pete Edmunds '14 and Erin Mullins '16 for umpiring the event and all of the Polar Bears that helped with scoring and course management.
The Polar Bears had a tough day on Mystic Lake at the New England Fowle Trophy. After starting the day 2-2, the Polar Bears had a series of tough races, losing many races right at the finish line. The team was scrappy and raced hard until the very end but ultimately finished tenth overall and was eliminated from the championship after racing on Saturday. Sailing for the Polar Bears was Jack McGuire, Hunter Moeller, Dana Bloch, Chester Jacobs, Matt Lyons, Mimi Paz, Christian Filter, Matt Kaplan, and Louisa Lindgren.
The Polar Bears will transition to the fleet race part of their season with the team competing in three events this upcoming weekend including the Thompson Trophy at Coast Guard, the Owen Trophy at Yale, and the President's Trophy at BU.
