Sailing Has Three Strong Showings at Weekend Races
Coach Pizzo's Report - October 28
The Polar Bears had another strong weekend with three events including the Wellahan Trophy hosted by UNH, the Stu Nelson Trophy hosted by Connecticut College, and the Oberg Trophy hosted by Northeastern.
Conditions were cold and windy all weekend. The Women's team competed at the Stu Nelson, finishing 5th of 18 teams competing. This was a highly competitive regatta featuring many of the top fifteen teams in the country and the overall points were extremely close. Erin Mullins '16 and Tess Lameyer '16 sailed A division, finishing in 12th with 97 points with four top four finishes. Courtney Koos '16 and Olivia Diserio '16 finished 8th in B division with 76 points and had five top five finishes. This is a great result leading into our fall Women's New England Championship which will be held at Harvard this upcoming weekend.
At the Wellahan Trophy hosted by UNH on Sunday, the Polar Bears finished 3rd of 14 teams. Phil Koch '16, Hunter Moeller '17, and Matt Lyons '17 sailed A division while Mimi Paz '17 and Frances Jimenez '16 sailed B division. Paz and Jimenez had a particularly strong day with all top five finishes and won B division.
The Oberg Trophy hosted by Northeastern was a great prelude to the upcoming Schell Trophy which will be held in the same boats at MIT this upcoming weekend. Conditions were tough on Saturday, with a windy westerly breeze on the Charles River. Seven different sailors competed for the Polar Bears including Jack McGuire '17, Charlotte Williamson '15, Julia Rew '16, Tom Peabody '14, Paige Speight '16, Pete Edmunds '14, and Kim Dempsey '14. The team finished 8th of 18 teams competing.
This upcoming weekend features all of our championship events including the Urn Trophy at Harvard, the Schell Trophy at MIT, and the Nickerson Trophy at Tufts.
