Sailing Qualifies for New Englands with First Place Finish
Coach Pizzo's Report - April 22
The Staake serves as the qualifier for team race New Englands which will be hosted by Harvard May 4-5. There were light and tricky conditions on Saturday with a shifty westerly breeze and cross current. The team started off a bit slow in the round robin, going 2-4 but hit its stride in the second round robin, finishing 6-0. Sunday was another tricky day at Roger Williams with a very unstable NW breeze that eventually died. We sailed five of the necessary six races to complete the round robin but the breeze totally died in the afternoon. Since we could not complete the round robin, the final results only reflect Saturday's racing. The team finished with a record of 8-4. Good speed and discipline allowed the Polar Bears to take control over the opponents and finish in winning combinations.
Coming up this weekend is the Jerry Reed Trophy hosted by Tufts which serves as the qualifier for women's nationals. The top nine move on to nationals hosted by USF and Eckerd College May 21-24.
