Sailing Team Garners Encouraging Results
Coach Pizzo's Report - October 1
Following a tough opening weekend, Bowdoin’s young team
has shown some promise amid a tough schedule.
At the Lake Champlain Open at UVM in the second week of
intercollegiate competition, sophomore Alex Takata and senior Laura
Heyl combined with junior DJ Hatch and freshman Mae Speight to
finish 7th at the 15 team event. Farther down Lake Champlain at the
Middlebury Cup, junior Billy Rohman and sophomore Ben Berg finished
2nd in A division while senior Jane Koopman and sophomore Clare
Henry finished 3rd in B division. The Polar Bears finished 3rd
overall among 10 teams.
Bowdoin struggled at its trophy events during the third weekend of
action, but some of its young and old prospects showed promise at
the Central Series at BU. Koopman and Henry sailed Saturday while
sophomore Jeff Goodrich and freshman Isabel Low sailed Sunday to
combine for 9th in A division. In B division freshman skipper Katie
Doble, sailing in her first intercollegiate regatta with veteran
junior crew Leah Hughes, put up some impressive finishes on
Saturday. Senior Tom Charpentier and sophomore Katharine
O’Brien then followed up by winning the day on Sunday with
only one finish out of the top three in six races. Bowdoin finished
4th in B division for the weekend and 6th of 17 overall.
