Four Polar Bears Set To Compete at NCAA Track & Field

BRUNSWICK, Maine - A quartet of Bowdoin athletes will compete at the NCAA Division III Championship this week, hosted at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio from May 25-27.

Ben Torda (men's steeplechase), Colin Tiernan (men's javelin), John Pietro (men's shot put) and Ellen Masalsky (women's javelin) will all represent the Polar Bears at nationals. Complete championship information, including details on the qualifiers, is available below.

CHAMPIONSHIP INFORMATION

INDIVIDUAL QUALIFIERS

  • Junior Benjamin Torda will enter nationals as the highest-seeded Polar Bear entrant as he qualified for the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:04.57 from the NESCAC Championship (April 29), ranking fourth in Division III this season. The preliminaries for the men's steeplechase are slated for 4:30 p.m. on Thursday afternoon with the finals scheduled for 11:45 a.m. on Saturday.
  • Senior Colin Tiernan's throw of 61.28 in the javelin at the New England D-III Championships (May 4) earned him qualification for the NCAA Championship, where he is seeded 14th entering the competition. The javelin prelims and finals are scheduled for 5:00 p.m. on Thursday.
  • Junior John Pietro qualified for the shot put at NCAA's in the shot put as his toss of 16.10 meters at the New England D-III meet on May 4 slotted him 20th in the nation this spring. The preliminaries and finals of the shot put are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Friday morning.
  • Senior Ellen Masalsky qualified for the NCAA Championship in the javelin, where she sits 21st in the rankings with a throw of 41.50 meters from the Charleston Southern Invitational back on March 17. The women's javelin preliminaries and finals are slated for 3:00 p.m. on Thursday afternoon.
