Wheeler was hired to serve as Bowdoin’s diving coach in 1989 after coaching both swimming and diving at Falmouth High School for 20 years. His high school teams were state runners-up three times and state champions on seven occasions. Dozens of his divers won state titlles and three went on to win All-American honors. Between 1971 and 1995, Harvey was awarded “Coach of the Year” on 11 occasions and, at Bowdoin, he has been NESCAC Diving Coach of the Year, NCAA Diving Coach of the Year and was inducted into the Maine Swimming and Diving Hall of Fame. His Bowdoin divers have made 13 trips to the NCAA DIV III Nationals and have won 26 All-American plaques.
