Polar Bears Sink Engineers In Home-Opening Swimming and Diving Meet
BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College swimming and diving teams toppled Worcester Polytechnic Institute in a pair of dual meets Saturday at Greason Pool.
In a relay-heavy competition, the Polar Bear women took a 136-48 win while the men's team earned a 113-71 victory.
Individually in the women's meet, Lela Garner (200 IM, 2:13.90) and Sarah Freshnock (400 IM, 4:49.00) came away with first-place showings. Christine Andersen claimed both the one-meter (263.77) and three-meter (266.70) diving competitions. On the men's side, Ryan Kulesza (200 IM, 1:59.39) earned a win along with Tom Kramer (one-meter dive, 309.82) and Josh Ellis (three-meter dive, 285.70).
Relay wins for Bowdoin women included the 400 medley team of Teri Faller, Helen Newton, Katie Kronick and Freshnock (4:05.21), the 800 medley team of Holly Rudel, Sophia Walker, Kronick and Bridget Killian (9:11.40), the 200 freestyle squad of Newton, Patty Boyer, Erin Houlihan and Maeve O'Leary (1:45.14), the 200 medley team of Rudel, Newton, Kronick and Walker (1:53.53) and the 400 freestyle squad of Killian, Freshnock, Garner and Walker (3:45.98).
On the men's side, Bowdoin came away with team wins in the 400 medley of Kulesza, John Lagasse, Linc Rhodes and Peter Deardorff (3:38.05), the 1650 free relay team of Tim Long, Evan Melby, Eli Bass and Deardorff (16:16.05), the 800 medley squad of Rhodes, JR Chansakul, Chris Granata and Deardorff (8:08.26), and the 200 medley team of Chris Warren, Lagasse, Logan House and Reed Fernandez (1:40.86).
The Polar Bears will return to the pool on Friday, January 18 with a home meet against Bates College. The action will begin at 7:00 p.m. at Greason Pool.
