Bowdoin Swim Teams Open Season With Split Against MIT and Babson

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College men's and women's swimming and diving teams hosted Babson and MIT in a season-opening meet at Greason Pool on Saturday.

The MIT men and women went undefeated, beating both Bowdoin and Babson. The Engineer men beat Bowdoin 222-76 and Babson 235-53. The Bowdoin men beat Babson head-to-head, 197-99. In the women's meet, MIT sank Bowdoin 212-87 and Babson 244-48. The Bowdoin women also beat Babson 224-71.

Bowdoin had several strong finishes in the meet, led by a pair of first-place finishes by Helen Newton. Newton won the 100 yard breaststroke (1:09.95) and 200 yard breaststroke (2:29.92).

Other top showings for the women included Allen Garner in the 200 yard freestyle (2nd, 1:59.02) and 200 yard IM (2nd, 2:14.16), Teri Faller in the 100 yard breaststroke (2nd, 1:00.53), Caitlin Hutchinson-Maddox in the 200 yard butterfly (2nd, 2:18.83), Patty Boyer in the 50 yard freestyle (25.64), Kelsey Goodwin in the 100 yard butterfly (2nd, 1:02.60).

Strong finishes for Bowdoin on the men's side included Nathan Mecray in the 100 yard breaststroke (2nd, 58.49) and 100 yard freestyle (2nd, 46.81), Chris Granata in the 200 yard butterfly (1:57.30), Basyl Stuyvesant in the 200 yard backstroke (1:58.76).

In the relay races, the Bowdoin men took second in the 400 meter relay in 3:32.34 and second in the 400 yard freestyle (3:15.93).
