BRUNSWICK, Maine - Zach Danssaert scored the game-winning goal in the 84th minute to lift the Bowdoin College men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Bates on Tuesday evening.
The Polar Bears improve to 5-1-0 (2-1-0 NESCAC) while the Bobcats fall to 2-3-1 (0-3-1 NESCAC).
Bates dented the scoreboard first, with 12:31 remaining in the opening period, when a high ball floated into the box, finding the head of John Murphy, who collided with Bowdoin goaltender Will Wise. The ball slipped through traffic and into the net to give the Bobcats a one-goal lead.
Bowdoin evened the score late in the half when a Bates hand ball in the box resulted in a penalty kick for the Polar Bears. Eric Goitia banged home the PK to knot the game 2:17 before intermission.
The teams traded blows into the second half, until a late push downfield by Andrew Jones resulted in the decisive goal. Jones led a push down the right wing and centered a perfectly-placed low pass to Danssaert, who flicked it inside the left post with 5:38 to go.
Bates had a pair of free kicks in Bowdoin's attacking zone in the final few minutes but couldn't find the equalizer.
Zach Shabman made four saves in the loss for Bates. Will Wise made five stops in goal for the Polar Bears. Bowdoin will return to action Saturday with a home contest against Connecticut College. Bates will travel to Hamilton on Saturday for a 1:30 p.m. match.
