Hicks, Nichols Named Second-Team All-Conference
BRUNSWICK, Maine - Bowdoin College goaltender Dan Hicks (New York,
N.Y.) and defender Call Nichols (Mill Valley, Calif.) have been
named Second-Team All-New England Small College Athletic Conference
performers. Both players collect their first-ever postseason awards
as they aided the Polar Bears to an 11-4-1 record and the program's
first NCAA bid since 2003.
A sophomore back, Nichols anchored a Bowdoin defense that ranked
third in the conference and 24th nationally by allowing just 10
goals in 16 contests. In addition, he scored a pair of goals this
season to aid the offense, netting the game's first goal in a 3-0
NESCAC quarterfinal win over Trinity. He also scored on a penalty
kick against Bates on September 19.
Hicks enjoyed one of the finest seasons for a netminder in Bowdoin
history, posting a 0.75 goals against average in 13 games and over
1,203 minutes of play. He carded six shutouts, one shy of the
school record, and even scored a goal on an 80-yard free kick in a
October 24 shutout victory at Trinity, earning him NESCAC Player of
the Week honors. In two seasons as a starter, Hicks has collected
15 wins to stand in a tie for fourth all-time at Bowdoin.
The Polar Bears will play at Plattsburgh State on Thursday evening
at 6:00 p.m. in the first round of the NCAA Division III
Tournament.
