Middlebury Wins NESCAC Golf Qualifier, Polar Bears Just Miss Bid to NESCAC's

BRUNSWICK, Maine - Middlebury closed out the weekend with a team score of 303 to win the NESCAC Golf Championship Qualifier with a total score of 595 at the par-72 Brunswick Golf Club. With the finish, the Panthers have earned the right to host the NESCAC Golf Championship on April 26-27 at the Ralph Myhre Golf Course in Middlebury.

Middlebury entered the day with a 14-stroke lead after a red-hot 292 on day one. The Panthers cooled off a bit on day two with a 303, good enough to earn a 17-stroke win over Trinity (612). Amherst (619) and Williams (622), who rounded out the qualifying teams. The host Polar Bears just missed out on earning one of the four championship spots, finishing with a team score of 626, four strokes out of fourth place.

Junior John Louie (Salinas, Calif.) paced Middlebury with rounds of 70 and 75 to capture medalist honors with a score of 145 (+1). Senior teammate Rob Donahoe (Canton, Mass.) finished one shot back at 146 (+2) after firing a 76 today.

Trinity was the model of consistency, posting 306 for the second-straight day to finish with a team score of 612. Sophomore Jeff Durkin (Scituate, Mass.) led the Bantam effort after turning in identical rounds of 74 for a final score of 148 (+4).

Amherst, which carded the day's best team round at 302, jumped from fifth to third with a two-day total of 619. Sophomore James Line (Glastonbury, Conn.) paced the Lord Jeffs rounds of 77 and 75 for a two-day score of 152 (+8).

Williams slipped one spot in the standings moving from third to fourth after turning in a team score of 315 for a weekend total of 622. Seniors Cody Semmelrock (Pomfret Center, Conn.) and Dylan Deither (Williamstown, Mass.) turned in two-day rounds of 155 (+11) each to pace the Ephs.

Tufts finished sixth, carding a score of 641. Colby and Hamilton tied for seventh, as both posted final scores of 648. Bates came in ninth (656), while Wesleyan was tenth (724).
