BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin field hockey team shut out visiting University of Maine-Farmington 5-0 on Wednesday night.

The second-ranked Polar Bears (8-1) tallied two goals in the opening half and added three in the second to hand the Beavers (6-2) their second loss of the season.

Game Highlights

  • The Polar Bears pressured through the opening minutes of play, finally breaking through 9:44 into the first half. Mettler Growney crossed a ball from high on the right side, through traffic, to Kimmy Ganong on the opposite post. Ganong slapped in the feed to take the 1-0 lead.
  • Bowdoin scored four minutes later, successfully converting on a penalty corner. Johna Cook inserted to Elizabeth Bennewitz at the top of the circle. Bennewitz teed up a drive that bested Patty Smith to double Bowdoin's lead.
  • Three minutes into the second half, Kara Finnerty scored on a solo effort in the circle. Finnerty weaved through several UMF defenders before finding the back of the cage with a close-range shot.
  • Juliana Fiore finished off a fast cross by Ganong on the right post. Fiore tracked the ball as it was nearing the end line and brought it back into play for a hard low-angle shot 11 minutes into the half.
  • Ganong scored the final goal of the game 16 minutes into the second half, burying a rebound off the pads.
  • Smith started the evening in net for the Beavers and tallied 13 saves in 46 minutes of work. Alyssa Arsenault made six saves in relief.
  • Clara Belitz started in net for the Polar Bears, with Liz Rill playing the final 18 minutes with a pair of saves.
  • Bowdoin outshot the visitors 31-3 and held a 14-1 edge in corners.
